An Irish Florilegium

Wild and Garden Plants of Ireland

Paintings by Wendy Walsh
Introduction by Ruth Isabel Ross
Notes on the Plates by Charles Nelson

‘A sumptuous book for serious botanists’
– Harper’s Bazaar

Irish Florilegium back jacketThis superb, large-format collection of exquisite drawings is by renowned botanical artist Wendy Walsh.

Working only from nature, she has painted a selection of the native and cultivated flora of Ireland, chosen not only for their botanical interest or beauty but also because they have an interesting history.

Ireland has produced a surprising number of devoted and intrepid plant-hunters who have played a significant part in the introduction into Europe of plants from remote places.

Ruth Isabel Ross recounts the history of plant collecting and horticulture by the Irish since the earliest times, and Dr Charles Nelson has written extensive notes on the individual plants.

With 48 hand-tipped colour plates

Wendy Walsh has exhibited widely and received many honours including gold medals from the Royal Horticultural Society of London. ‘She is at the pinnacle of botanical art’, according to Professor Grenville Lucas, formerly Keeper of the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. She has lived and worked in Ireland for over fifty years. In 1997 an honorary doctorate was conferred on her by the University of Dublin.
Ruth Isabel Ross is a well known writer on horticulture. She is the author of Irish Wild Flowers, Irish Trees and A Year in an Irish Garden, as well as several books on traditional Irish cooking.
Dr Charles Nelson for nineteen years held the post of horticultural taxonomist at the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin. An acknowledged expert on the wild and cultivated flora of Ireland, his encyclopaedia of garden plants of Irish origin, A Heritage of Beauty, was voted ‘Best Reference Book 2001’ by the Garden Writers’ Guild.
