Apropos Rodin

Introduction by Geoff Dyer
Photographs by Jennifer Gough-Cooper

‘A dazzling collection of photographs by Jennifer Gough-Cooper, all of which are sensual and many deeply erotic’
– The Independent on Sunday

‘In Jennifer Gough-Cooper’s photographs, the genius of Rodin is strikingly made flesh … a labour of love’
– The Times

Auguste Rodin rose from humble origins to become one of the most influential sculptors of all time, regarded during his life as a Michelangelo of the modern age. The influence of such masterpieces as The Thinker, Eternal Idol, The Kiss and The Burghers of Calais still reverberates today, almost one hundred years after Rodin’s death.

Jennifer Gough-Cooper’s interest in photography was sparked by a chance visit to the Hôtel Biron in Paris, Rodin’s eighteenth-century château. There, Rodin’s sculpture inhabits its own environment; light streams in from grand windows, bathing objects in colour and breathing life into the stone. Her photographs reveal soft Impressionist forms with a wonderful painterly quality.

Jennifer Gough-Cooper was involved in the Marcel Duchamp retrospective that formed the inaugural show at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, in 1977, and later worked for many years on the artist, culminating in the book Marcel Duchamp: Work and Life, published to coincide with the exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi, Venice, in 1993. Geoff Dyer’s many books include But Beautiful (winner of the Somerset Maugham Award), Out of Sheer Rage (a finalist in the United States for a National Book Critics’ Circle Award) and The Ongoing Moment (winner of the ICP Infinity Award for Writing on Photography).
