As I See It

The Photographs of John Loengard

Introduction by Ann Beattie

‘Loengard always captures something unpredictable in an image’
– The Guardian

‘Never less than exceptional, and occasionally sublime …
As John Loengard sees it, it is a very beautiful world indeed’
– The Leeds Guide

‘A book to smile over’
– The Independent

John Loengard, one of the great LIFE magazine photographers, sums up his fifty-year career in this handsome volume. His subjects include movie stars, writers, politicians, artists and other photographers, as well as everyday people engaged in a host of extraordinary activities – or rather, typical activities rendered unforgettable and compelling by the photographer’s vision.

From a shimmering Marilyn Monroe to a man dozing on the beach, from a guffawing Ronald Reagan to Henri Cartier-Bresson flying a kite, from a groundskeeper in Dublin to picnickers in Central Park, Loengard’s vision moves us with its humanity and artistry.

Loengard’s own commentaries on each of his pictures enlarge our understanding and deepen our appreciation of them. These vivid texts give us a glimpse of the mind behind the photographer’s eye.

'Young photographers use the word magic to describe the craft they've discovered. But I suspect our chief emotions are anticipation, frustration and patience – balanced by a marvellous sense of elation when things go right, when we think we've captured in a photograph some missing feeling, or hidden beauty, or bit of mystery from the fabric of life.' – John Loengard

John Loengard received his first assignment from LIFE magazine in 1956, while still an undergraduate at Harvard. He joined the magazine’s staff in 1961, and in 1978 was instrumental in its re-birth as a monthly, serving as picture editor until 1987. Ann Beattie is The Edgar Allen Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia.
