The achievement of the Spanish artist Miquel Barceló has gained wider and wider international recognition over the past twenty years.
This book is the fruit of a unique relationship between the artist and the photographer Jean-Marie del Moral, whose privileged access to Barceló’s world is the result of seventeen years of trust, friendship and collaboration. It takes the form of an artistic rite of passage, accompanying Barceló on his journeys throughout Europe and Africa; an endless drive to move on and keep exploring which is reflected in his art.
Both intimate and immediate, the photographs capture and echo the dynamism and spontaneity that are palpable in all of Barceló’s creations, from paintings and ceramics to architectural projects and extracts from Barceló’s personal diaries and notebooks. The organic and the artificial are intermingled and juxtaposed in his work, and inspiration can derive from eclectic objects, from animal bones and dried plants to kitsch plastic toys.
These striking images suggest a reading of Barceló's work as an ever-changing, ever-evolving whole, while they gradually combine to form a work of art in their own right.
Jean-Marie del Moral has published books on the studios of Mirò, Picasso and Van Gogh,and is a noted contributor to such magazines as Vogue, World of Interiors and Madame Figaro.
