The Sri Lanka Gardens

David Robson
Photographs by Dominic Sansoni

'It is hard to imagine either brother faulting the impeccable, sumptuous and handsome treat that Dobson, Sansoni and the Thames and Hudson publishing team have put together'
– Sunday Times, Sri Lanka

.The work of architect Geoffrey Bawa was a unique fusion of vernacular style, modern construction and the lush tropical landscape of Sri Lanka.

Geoffrey Bawa the Sri Lanka Gardens
Bawa's most famous garden is at his estate, Lunuganga, and it is rivalled only by Brief, the lesser-known garden of his brother, Bevis. Evolving over several decades, these two gardens and their outbuildings and sculptures represent highpoints of tropical design in which architecture and landscape are intimately mixed.

Bawa: The Sri Lanka Gardens includes an overview of the country’s rich horticultural tradition and the social background that inspired the Bawas. It is followed by chapters that explore and celebrate the brothers' relationship and the architectural soul of Brief and Lunuganga through superb photo essays and descriptions, revealing the aesthetics and architectural mastery of the creators as well as the stunning context of Sri Lanka itself.

Also included are directions on how to get to Brief and Lunuganga, a bibliography and a glossary.

David Robson published a comprehensive account of the life and work of Geoffrey Bawa in 2002 and followed it up with a critical assessment of Bawa’s influence in South and Southeast Asia. He divides his time between Britain and Sri Lanka. Dominic Sansoni published the seminal book, 'Lunuganga', with Geoffrey Bawa and Christoph Bon in 2006. He was a close friend of both Geoffrey and Bevis Bawa. Sansoni lives in Sri Lanka.
