David Adjaye is one of Britain’s leading contemporary architects. Known for his domestic projects, Making Public Buildings focuses for the first time on Adjaye’s engagement with civic space and the built environment.
Adjaye combines the sensual and emotive with a conceptual approach to the fundamental elements of architecture.
His influences range from African art and architecture to contemporary art and music leading to numerous collaborations with artists, including Olafur Eliasson and Chris Ofili.
Published on occasion of his exhibition at London’s Whitechapel Gallery, this book brings together a distinguished group of authors to reflect on Adjaye’s practice, significance and influences. Okwui Enwezor and Saskia Sassen discuss the increasing need for a politicized definition of public space, while Nikolaus Hirsch and Peter Allison consider Adjaye’s attention to materials.
Two interviews with David Adjaye, one led by Peter Allison and the other by Kodwo Eshun, guide us through his approach to making public buildings within a global context. They are accompanied by drawings, documents and photographs relating to ten of Adjaye’s most important projects.
David Adjaye, educated in Africa and in London, is principal of the 40-person-strong Adjaye/Associates.
Peter Allison has curated exhibitions on contemporary architecture and contributes to a number of international publications and teaches in London. He teaches in London and has recently edited David Adjaye Houses (Thames & Hudson).
Okwui Enwezor is Dean of Academic Affairs at San Francisco Art Institute and previously taught at the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University. He was the artistic director of Documenta 11 and the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial, and is currently the artistic director of the Second Biennial of Contemporary Art, Seville.
Kodwo Eshun is Director of the MA in Aural and Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College, University of London and author of More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction.
Nikolaus Hirsch, joint founder of Wandel, Lorch and Hirsch in Saarbrucken, is the architect of the Dresden Synagogue and the Hinzert Document Centre, Germany. He contributes to international architecture journals and publications.
Saskia Sassen teaches at the University of Chicago and London School of Economics. She is the author of Territory, Authority and Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages, and contributor to major international publications.
