|
| ‘Francis Watson achieves a brilliant condensation of an overwhelming mass of material and manages to preserve a masterly overall balance’ | | – History Today |
| ‘An invaluable work, beautifully illustrated’ | | – The Times |
India’s enduring distinctiveness – its widely recognized but often bewildering ‘diversity of unity’ – emerges from the pages of Francis Watson’s immensely readable book as a product of geographical simplicity but historical complexity.
For this revised edition, the Indian-born writer, journalist and commentator Dilip Hiro has contributed a new final chapter which takes the chronicle of India’s history into the twenty-first century.
Francis Watson first visited India in 1938 and on the outbreak of World War II was assigned to intelligence with the General Staff at Delhi. He subsequently worked as Director of Counter-Propaganda to the Government of India, for which he was awarded an OBE, before resuming his career as a writer and broadcaster. Among his many publications were Gandhi, The Trial of Mr Gandhi and The Frontiers of China.
Dilip Hiro’s many books include Inside India Today, Dictionary of the Middle East and Holy Wars: The Rise of Islamic Fundamentalism.
