Kandinsky

Jelena Hahl-Koch

This is the first monograph on Kandinsky to take account of the latest findings from Russia and Eastern Europe, made after the fall of Communism. More than fifty works never before reproduced are included, along with extracts from hitherto unpublished manuscripts prepared by the artist as commentary to his paintings.

Kandinsky’s rich, trail-blazing work and complex personality have compelled attention ever since the controversy surrounding the appearance of his first abstract paintings in 1911.

A member of the ‘Blaue Reiter’ and the Bauhaus, a friend of Franz Marc and Paul Klee, Kandinsky was ostracized by the Communists in his native Russia, and was labelled as a painter of ‘Degenerate Art’ by the Nazis. His influence covered virtually the entire spectrum of modern art, but for decades much of his work languished, unseen, in museum depots and collections in the former Soviet Union.

Along with the latest scholarship, this book includes a biographical summary, bibliography and comprehensive indices, making it a truly substantial overview of this pioneer of modernist painting.
