| The tableaux, environments and conceptual pieces of Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz are direct, powerful and uncompromising. Published on the occasion of a major retrospective in New York and Berlin in 1996, this survey follows the emergence of Edward’s work from the Beat aesthetic of the early 1950’s, through his work made jointly with Nancy from 1972 until his death in 1994.
Combining the spontaneity of jazz, the emotional intensity of Abstract Expressionism and the home-made approach of do-it-yourself modernism, these extraordinary sculptures, collages and installations are also socially conscious realist works by artists engaged in an ongoing critique of the world around them.
As well as illustrating over 400 works created between 1954 and 1994 this book also contains texts by historians, artists and friends, and an extended chronology, specially written by Nancy Reddin Kienholz. |
