Marcel Duchamp: The Portable Museum

The Making of the Boîte-en-valise

Ecke Bonk
Translated by David Britt

In 1936 Marcel Duchamp, one of the most important artists and theorists of the twentieth century, started making a ‘portable museum’ – the famous Boîte-en-valise (Box in a valise) containing miniature versions of his principal works. Over the next thirty years seven versions of this remarkable multiple appeared, varying in size and scale, but all containing reproductions of his paintings, drawings, objects and ready-mades.

This book documents the history of Duchamp’s boxes – miniature museum, doll’s house, stormy-weather pack, catalogue of works and first-aid kit all rolled into one. With over 500 illustrations, each item is examined in detail, revealing the ingenious techniques and artistic strategies Duchamp brought to the making of the boxes and their individual components.

Ecke Bonk, with the active support of the Duchamp estate, has meticulously researched the genesis and making of the Boîte, and much fascinating information about the works is published here for the first time.
