An outline of events from the Iron Age up to the emperor Honorius’ advice to the Britons in 410 to fend for themselves is followed by the thematic text which tackles the issues facing Britons after the absorption of their culture by an invading army, including the role of government and the military, religion, commerce and technology, and day-to-day life in towns and the countryside.
The narrative is brought vividly to life from inscriptions on tombstones and buildings as well as the writings of Tacitus and Dio. Feature boxes are devoted to important topics, from the city of London and the building on Hadrian’s Wall to major discoveries such as the Vindolanda writing tablets and the treasure hoards of Mildenhall and Thetford.
Lavishly illustrated, Roman Britain includes reconstruction drawings that re-create structures from Chester’s ‘elliptical building’ to the triumphal arch at Richborough and the temple at Bath. Dramatic aerial views of remains along Hadrian’s Wall and the Saxon Shore fort of Portchester are featured, as are a host of images of villas, mosaics, coins, pottery and sculpture. The book incorporates the very latest discoveries, including the remains of a stadium recently uncovered at Colchester.
Guy de la Bédoyère co-presented Channel 4’s Big Roman Dig and has appeared on many other television programmes such as Time Team. He is the author of thirteen books on the period.
