Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, David Livingstone, Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong: these are some of the greatest travellers of all time. The Seventy Great Journeys in History chronicles their stories and many more, describing epic voyages of discovery and revealing the motivations of the world’s most adventurous explorers.

We follow Alexander the Great to the Indus and Hannibal across the Alps; in medieval times we travel with Muslim and Christian pilgrims, and trek beside Genghis Khan and Ibn Battuta. The Renaissance brought Columbus to the Americas and the circumnavigation of the world. The 17th and 18th centuries saw many of the gaps in the global maps filled by Tasman, Bering and Captain Cook, while in the 19th century journeys were made for scientific purposes, famously by von Humboldt and Darwin. In our own times, the last inhospitable ends of the earth were reached – including both Poles and the world’s highest mountain.

Here are human stories of triumph and success, but also of terrible hardships, tragedy and astonishing courage in adversity. Here also are all possible reasons for travel – from migration to mysticism, from curiosity to conquest. Each of these journeys has had an impact that resonates through the ages.

With hundreds of photographs, paintings, illustrations and portraits, plus specially commissioned maps, The Seventy Great Journeys in History is for everyone who is fascinated by the stories and personalities of those who were there first, who explored the unexplored and who set out into the unknown, bringing alive the romance and sheer thrill of travel in a way no book has done before.

Robin Hanbury-Tenison explorer, author, conservationist and campaigner was named by the Sunday Times in 1983 as ‘the greatest explorer of the past 20 years’. He made the first land crossing of South America at its widest point, and the first river crossing from the Orinoco to Buenos Aires. He was one of the founders of Survival International, the worldwide movement to support tribal peoples, and has been awarded an OBE for his work on their behalf. He is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines, has made several films of his expeditions for television, and is the editor of The Oxford Book of Exploration.
